Castlegar....... 3-13
In this West Board Senior Hurling Championship game played at the Stadium on Sunday. Carnmore came from eleven points behind to gain a late but well earned draw. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half 'Castlegar settled down quickly and after two minutes went ahead .with a Kevin Shaughnessy point. This was soon followed by a goal from Stephen Hosty and a point from left half back Stephen Francis.
Carnmore fought back and almost reluctantly scored 2-1. Their point came from Matty Greaney after five minutes and then in the Fifteenth minute they were very fortunate to score a goal through Michael Hanley from a free. But Castlegar still had a tight rein on the game and left half forward Tom Madden had a goal in the eighteenth minute but their second goal was a different affair; Tom Madden soloed in from twenty five yards and beat three defenders before sending the ball crashing to the net. Before half time they had further points from Stephen Hosty, Paddy Glynn,, Alfie Cooney and John Connolly and went in at half time leading by 3-9 to 2-1.
Carnmore started the second half with Padraic Fahy missing a goal from two yards. But then two fortuitous things happened. Michael Greaney was easily the best player on the-field during this half exasperated by his team mates began to shout at them and also the Castle-gar players. Then Paddy Walsh suffered a bloody nose. Once Carnmore became incensed there was no stopping them. Time now was their only enemy and with it slowly ticking away Michael Greaney, John Long, Roddy Kenny and Padraic Fahy all had points. In the twentieth minute of this half Michael Greaney scored a goal. Castlegar could only manage four points during this half and so the game ended in a draw.
