The Connacht Tribune, Friday, July 2
One-of the best equipped and newest G.A.A. fields in the country will be officially opened on Sunday by Galway County Board officials. It will also be blessed. So after six years of hard work by nearly 200 club members Carnmore's dream of having and owning their own superb pitch is to become a visible reality. Work began on the project in 1965 and since that time the West Galway club has dipped deep into its pockets to raise £9,000 to supply the area with the best. And the best means a fully developed playing surface for six teams representing Carnmore and Claregalway in the premier competitions here in Galway throughout the year!
IDEA
Future plans for the new ground will mean that in the next few years showers will be installed. At the moment the club is concerned with getting the ground "off" to a good start. Men with the vision and the ideas for the area included the following: John McDonagh, County Councilor, Paddy Ruane; Michael Hynes, Paddy Fahy and Jack Murphy. Backing these and co-operating in bringing such a worthwhile scheme into the realms of Carnmore reality were: Eddie Hanley, Chairman, Jackie Kenny, Secretary, and Treasurer, Jimmy Hughes. On Sunday all these and many more will watch as the field is blessed and then opened by County Chairman, Mr. Gerry Cloherty. Mr. Stephen Carty, President 'of the Galway' Board will also attend.
WONDERFUL
Yesterday in a glowing tribute to the club and its members, Mr. Cloherty said: "I think they deserve every credit. Their wonderful example should be a lesson to others. To coincide with the opening the Carnmore club has succeeded in persuading two of the top footballing clubs in Galway to meet in a challenge at 2.30. And this is a game that nobody should miss. Clashing will be Fr. Griffin's the current county kingpins and Tuam Stars, certainly an attractive fixture. Reason for saying this is that the two could very well meet in this year's county final. Well stranger things have happened and both are in top form at the moment.
INTEREST
Following this at 4 pm. will be a hurling game. Again it is another most attractive pairing. Clare have agreed to travel to meet Galway in a senior game. Stimulating interest in this game is the fact that the Bannermen have been in great form of late and succeeded in causing quite a few surprises in the National League. And what is so interesting about that? Well nothing, except this: When the new League system came into operation Galway found themselves in Division A and Clare were landed in Division B. Throughout the campaign Clare were the more impressive and questions were asked, like do Clare deserve to be in the bottom rank while Galway remain up?
ANSWERS
At the time there were no answers, the two never met. Now on Sunday they will - we believe it will be a most exciting game. Best of luck Galway. Here we might mention that Carnmore are going great guns in the county championships. Their next game will be against Maree/Oranmore on July 25th.
