Maree-Oranmore………5-6 Carnmore………2-4
This West Board minor hurling final at the Pearse Stadium, Salthill was spoiled by after-match fighting. The players did not take part in the melee and fighting was so bad that the Gardai had to be called in. A young holiday maker was injured in the fracas. The game itself was hard hitting but clean. Maree-Oran led by 3-3 to 2-4 at the interval after playing against the breeze. Switches after this enabled Maree to continue on their winning way. They had been upset by the great play of S. Duggan for Carnmore at mid field but the arrival of D. Dooley to partner J. Cannon brought vast improvement. The Maree half back line of M. Bannon, S. Grealish and W. Commins was rock solid in the second half and this was the main reason for Carnmore's collapse - they failed to score for the entire second half.
MURPHY SHINES
P. Duggan was Carnmore's top defender and he got great assistance from P. McDonagh. At midfield M. Leonard and S. Duggan had a top class first half but were outclassed, in the second mostly. P. "Kipper" Murphy led the Maree scorers with a personal tally 2-3. Others to impress here were E. Dooley and G. Hannify. Carnmore's best forwards were M. J. Greaney and G. Grealish.
Scorers:
Maree-Oran: P. Murphy 2-3; E. Dooley 2-0; -T. Fahy 1-0; D. Dooley, S. Grealish and G. Hannify 0-1 each.
Carnmore: M. J. Greaney and G. Grealish 1-0 each, M. Leonard and S. Duggan 0-2 each.
