Liam Mellows………3-8 Carnmore………9-16
SCINTILLATING
Carnmore handed out a drubbing to Co. Champions Liam Mellowes at sunny Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Now they go through to the next round of the West Board Championship and must be in with a great chance of final victory.
At half time they only led by a single point - 2-4 to 2-5 - but then they turned on the sort of power that would give even the strongest of hearts cause to fear and proceeded to demolish the city side. With James Grealish, Jimmy Hughes, surely a name for Gerry Cloherty's notebook and Padraic Fahy in dazzling form they moved relentlessly forward and consistently prized open the gaps that were never too tightly sealed. The result of all this was that Mellowes keeper Jimmy Hegarty spent more in action than anybody else - the scoreboard shows that he picked the ball out of the net an almost unbelievable nine times.
GREAT
A whirlwind second half start saw the winners tack on two goals within the space of five minutes. Flirt came after a move initiated by Jim Hughes and both were scored by Tom Madden. Then in the tenth and eleven minute the becapped Madden capped a great afternoon's work when he hammered over' two points in a row. At this stage Carnmore were leading by 4-11 b 2-7.
The champion's only reply to this sort of play was bursts from Liam Sammon, Ray Gilmore Paddy Ryan, Willie Concannon and Pat Harrington. Sadly, though these were fighting a losing battle which they never looked like winning. In the forwards Harrington, Concannon and Ryan were always quickly shackled from the strong tackling backs. Best of the Carnmore defence was goalie Paddy Walsh, comer back Fergus Madden, and half back Jack Hession. These three were the main stay of the challengers defence. However, they were only called on now and again to cope with opposition that never looked at their last summer best
WARNED
One goal and two solitary points during thirty minutes of play is hardly the sort of form that can win the title this year. So Mellowes you've been warned. There are other teams looking for your mantle. An obvious question: Can Carnmore take the title this year? True on Sunday they showed that they certainly got the talent in all the vital spots from goalie to forwards. However, there is a question mark over against their temperament. In the past they're thrown away more than the West Board title by their inability to keep cool when it mattered most. This year promises to be one of their best in a long while. Nine goals scored while only conceding three shows that they have the ability so the rest is up to their selectors and mentors. Best of luck to them.
