Junior Camogie Final 2007
Carnmore 2-08
Kiltormer 0-11
Carnmore Junior A Camogie team will be playing Intermediate camogie next year after they defeated Kiltormer in a pulsating contest in Athenry on Sunday evening. Carnmore went into this game as favorites after defeating Kiltormer in the league earlier this year however they were pushed all the way by a determined Kiltormer side who never gave up.
Carnmore got off to the best possible start with a well worked goal from Rebecca McCafferty inside the first 2 minutes. The two teams then traded a point apiece - Carnmore's score coming from captain Mary Ryan. Lorraine Crowe then scored her first point of the day after a good run and handpass from Tracy Hynes (or is that Hayes?!). Kiltormer scored two points on the trot before a great point by Tracy Hynes after a powerful run through the Kiltormer defence.
Kiltormer hit back with a free to leave the score at 1-3 to 0-4. Kiltormer were now applying a lot of pressure to the Carnmore goal and a couple of goalline clearances were required to keep Carnmore in front. Kiltormer scored another free to bring them within a point of Carnmore coming up to the half time break. However Carnmore had the last say in the first half with a 45 from Lorraine Crowe to leave the score at half time 1-4 to 0-5.
Again Carnmore were quickest out of the blocks after the break with a goal from Maria Fox just a minute into the second half. Kiltormer responded with a point from a free and one from play to leave the score 2-4 to 0-7. Stephanie Molloy then burst into life with a great run and score for Carnmore. Kiltormer, however, wouldn't let Carnmore pull away as they tapped over 2 more points to put only 2 between them.
Carnmore stepped up a gear and had a purple patch where they scored three points in a row - 1 from Rebecca McCafferty and 2 from the stick of Lorraine Crowe (1 free). With a five point lead and just 5 minutes Carnmore were looking good. Kiltormer scored 2 more points in the final minutes but couldn't get the goal that would have tied up the match. So Carnmore ran out 3 point winners on a scoreline of 2-08 to Kiltormer's 11 points.
It was a great performance from the whole Carnmore team and it is difficult to pick out individual performances. Elaine Grealish was superb in goal and she picked up the official player-of-the-match award. The 6 backs were outstanding throughout despite some hairy moments around the goal! The two Molloys at centre field cleared some great ball from defence and supported the attack throughout the game. And each of the six fowards scored from play and worked extremely hard to stop the Kitormer defence from clearing ball.
Well done to the girls and the management team of Anthony Molloy, Sean Daveron and Mickey Grealish.
