Junior A Hurling Semi-Final 2007

Carnmore 1-06
Castlegar 0-12

Carnmore Junior A Hurling team suffered a disappointing defeat to Castlegar in the Junior A Semi-Final in Athenry on Saturday September 1st. Carnmore never really got going up front during the game although they had plenty of possesion throughout the game.

Carnmore got off to a good start with the wind at their backs and were 3 points up thanks to a frees from Damien Fahy and a 65 from wing back Ronan Walsh. That appeared to rattle Castlegar into action and they scored the next 6 points of the game to leave the score 0-3 to 0-6. Castlegar pulled an extra man into their half back line during this period and he done a lot of damage as Carnmore struggled to gain possession in their half forward line. Damien Fahy, who was struggling with a thumb injury, missed a couple of frees for Carnmore before Ronan Walsh put one over just before the half time break. The score at half time was 0-4 to 0-6.

Playing into the wind in the second half with a two point deficit, Carnmore were up against it. Castlegar pressed home their advantage with three points after the break with a solitary reply coming from centre forward Martín O' Connell for Carnmore. After a long scoreless period where Carnmore had plenty of possession which they couldn't convert into scores, Castlegar tapped over another point to leave the score 0-5 to 0-10. Richard Donavan replied with a point for Carnmore but this was cancelled out by another score from Castlegar. Carnmore needed a goal at this stage and it duly came 5 minutes from time. A long range free from Ronan Walsh dropped short and somehow found its way into the Castlegar net to leave 2 points between the teams. Carnmore, however, couldn't push on to get the required scores to win the game and Castlegar fired over one more point to leave the winning margin at 3 points. The final score was 1-06 to 0-12.

Carnmore will be disappointed that they did not give a better account of themselves on the day. Injuries to Damien Fahy and Tomás Grealish didn't help the cause as the lack of scoring power up front cost them the game.
