Senior Hurling Championship 2007

Carnmore 1-15
Portumna 1-23

After their first two results in the group, Carnmore were facing an uphill task against Portumna in this Group B Senior Hurling Championship game in Kenny Park, Athenry.

Carnmore got off to the best possible start with a well worked goal from Barry Hanley inside the first 2 minutes. The two teams then traded 2 points apiece - Carnmore's scores coming from Shane Hynes - one from a free. Portumna scored another point from play before Joe Canning struck with a goal - a powerful flick from a long range free which Martin King in the Carnmore goal was powerless to stop. John Paul hit back with a point for Carnmore as the scores continued to come thick and fast.

Portumna then got another point which left the score Carnmore 1-3 to Portumna's 1-5. Damien Hayes scored 2 quick points in succession for Portumna along with another from a free as Portumna threatened to pull away. However Carnmore responded with 4 points in a row from Shane Hynes from placed balls. This left the score Carnmore 1-7 Portumna 1-8.

Portumna scored another point before there was a long delay for an injury to one of the Portumna midfielders - the player was stretchered off with a suspected broken collar bone. 2 more points for Portumna and a point from a free for Carnmore left the half time score Carnmore 1-8 Portumna 1-11.

Portumna were the quickest team out of the blocks in the second half and added 2 points to their lead within the first few minutes. TJ Hynes scored a long range free to keep Carnmore in touch. Portumna upped their game with 4 points in a row - however 3 of these scores came from soft frees given away by Carnmore. Carnmore tried hard to get back in the game and Shane Hynes pointed a free but this was quickly cancelled out by a Portumna score. This left the score Carnmore 1-10 Portumna 1-18. Carnmore could never close the gap as every time they scored Portumna hit back with one of their own in what was a very stop start second half - a complete contrast to the free flowing first half. Both sides scored 5 points more apiece to leave the full time score Carnmore 1-15 Portumna 1-23.

Shane Hynes was Carnmore's top scorer on the day with an impressive haul of 12 points - 10 of these were frees, one was a 65.
